Hey folks! As I launch into the professional world, I figured I'd give a little insight into my background as an artist, as well as my current projects &position.
I graduated in May from Samford University in Birmingham, AL, with a BFA in Musical Theatre. While I did a lot of performance in college, I also branched out into directing, devising, education, and playwriting while in my undergrad program. I believe artists are inherently educators and communicators, and I'm passionate about representing those crucial identities in all projects I pursue.
I am currently a season long intern with Burning Coal Theatre Company in Raleigh, NC. Burning Coal's mission is "to do literal, visceral, affecting theatre that is experienced - not simply seen." Along with doing art administrative work and learning more about how a professional nonprofit theatre company runs, I am also assistant directing several shows in their MainStage season. The first show, opening their season, is the Southeastern premiere of Clare Bayley's The Container, telling the story of immigrants on the journey west, with the audience joining them for the journey inside of an actual shipping container.
I cannot wait to continue to learn and help others learn in return through this project and the form. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you have - I pursue art for the conversations inspired by it! Check out some of my previous projects in the other tabs as well.
Welcome to the journey.
- Katie B.
